Petrov checked to luminescent dial on this wrist again and fidgeted in his seat. He knew that checking his watch wouldn't make the time go any faster, but it gave him something to do, and helped keep him awake. The last thing he needed was any more "Grampa" comments from his team in the back.
He had worked with them all before on and off over the years since the Federation collapsed and those with their "particular" skill sets were no longer "required". The whole team was Human, a point that made Petrov a hell of a lot more comfortable. It wasn't that he had a problem with baestnic's, quite the opposite. He had worked with them all throughout his military career and many missions were critical to the benefits having their heightened senses.
No, this time it was for ambiguity. The local Demographic was predominately Animal, Canine to the specific. Last thing he needed was a Species or Breed Watch initiated if they got blown. And all Humans look and smell alike, right?
This was a snap mission, only two weeks lead in. Hell, he was lucky the team he got were available on such short notice. The van they were in was a retired local delivery hack, one that was seen everywhere and barley noticed. It was thanks to a local know drug dealer who didn't mind cash and knew to keep his mouth shut. The plates were off a similar van only swapped earlier this afternoon. Hardly an optimal lead in, but it was what it was.
The local dialect was too hard to learn in the time they had, so they went for a foreign derivative. They had used the two weeks to good effect learning the local terminology though, so they could pass as immigrants, not total outsiders.
Petrov had eyes on the house. Like all the best laid plans, this one had gone to shit early in the piece. The family, Red Foxes from the Isle who had settled over here after the war. looked to have started a party. From what Petrov could tell, it was the males Birthday, and it was a small Family affair. The initial fear was more family would arrive, and then they would off target and back to the apartment. No use going in to a situation that your not prepared for if it isn't 100% time critical. But no one else came, so the plan was still Go.
The male was ex-military, a storeman. Hardly a threat, but still not to be underestimated, so he would die first. The Female was an enigma. His handler got no information on her, other than she was to be considered a threat, and if possible, taken alive. Petrov read from this that if she blinked in a way he didn't like, she would die.
The Target was the girl. A Kit, aged 5. She was to be lifted unharmed and taken to a DP where she would be verified and they would be released to Exfil. One of the Warmer Islands just off the coast for a few weeks was Petrovs plan. The Sun, the women, the loose local security...
He scratched the stubble on his chin thinking about it, and heard some mechanical clicking behind him. They had checked and re-checked all their equipment before they stepped off, but old habits die hard, and it was good to see that he wasn't the only one who was bored and fidgety.
The festivities had wound up an hour ago, and it was probably getting about time for a working family to get ready for bed. He didn't want to leave it too long, as strangers calling by once you are already in bed tends to put people on edge. No, he wanted the full effect of the element of surprise, and to catch the two threats in close proximity in order to neutralize them as efficiently as possible.
He took one last look at his watch for no particular reason, and stepped out of the van. There was no need to advertise his intent, and the rear doors opened as his team grouped into single file and made their way toward the house.
