Well, I just got back from the Adelaide 500. It's kinda different with the new cars, they are completely different from last year, and it shows.
The new engines have MASSIVE Valve overlap, and the drivers cannot adjust fuel trim within the cockpit, so for the first 25-30 laps they were backfiring massively when coming off the throttle and bouncing the valves on upshift almost as hard as the backfire's on liftoff, which caused a LOT of engine failures for this kind of racing.
The Dynamics of the cars is massively different as well, they dip less into the corner due to now having a rear transaxle gearbox and less weight up front, and also having the Fuel inboard they hold better mid corner speed and are a lot flatter all the way through.
The Nissan's are back (Altima, not even SOLD over here) ,but it felt as though they were holding back until they are fully developed. The New Mercedes sound Awesome, but kept breaking, so they will have some way to go. One thing that was a little concerning was that all cars kept burning the drivers feet, so THAT will need fixing over night.
It's all a little fake, I think. It's become a formula so far removed from reality it's a little sad. NONE of the Comercial Cars in the field have 5L V8's anymore, or Transaxel gearboxes etc... I don't even think the Nissan is Rear wheel drive is it? But that's what it takes to bring other makes into the series, apparently, and I 'spose thats a good thing... right?
