...that beats all pony threads!!!!
So, just in case you didn't know, or you've had your head in the clouds or were rendered unconscious in a truck accident 3 years ago only to awake and find that whilst your body has mended, your Family has left you and you have a massive Medical debt and no means to pay it; there is a new version of My Little Pony coming out. It WAS going to be a series, but there was a fair amount of negativity pushed on it, so they are going to run it as a Movie.
It's called My Little Pony - Equestria Girls, and it's... we see for yourself.
Opinions?

It looks OK, but disappointing when you compare it to MLP:FiM episodes. Unless they're into Transformations, Bronies don't want to see their favorite ponies as people, they want to see them as ponies! Also the setting for MLP was versatile enough to do all kinds of plots, and moving to the (probably more limited in plots you can do) typical school setting is not an improvement. I think the producers were trying to make the series into a school series as are popular at the moment (Brats, etc.), much like some record companies trying to reshape their musicians to fit into a predefined category. (Also publishers often do this - one writer was told "You're a Category C writer so you can't have that much description in your book.")
It reminds me of two films in this way, and I think it explains why they made this mistake:
One, the failed Judge Dredd movie. Fans of the series were fans of a hero who is judge and avenger (much in the Wild West Lawman way), but the writers of the movie said, How can we make it Different? We'll have him on the run, not able to be judge etc.! Wowee, we thought of something that's never been done in the series before! It hadn't been done before because that's not what the series was about and not what fans wanted.
Another was a King Arthur's Court movie, but the writers couldn't get comprehend the mellee combat of those days (you know, combat with swords etc of the RPGs). The knight-hero does kung-fu fighting for much of the film, and the writers were mentally stuck in the mindset of 'action sequences are always done with guns' and so the bad guys come in to hold everyone up with handguns single-handed-crossbows (which incidentally are completely unhistorical!) at the end. Same thing here - the writers probably can't handle the MLP universe, I particularly mean they can't write a plot like any of the MLP episodes, they can only write school serieses.

Nice summery! Yep, I agree with you completely. But as a non-canon movie, or spin-off universe it might just work.

I gotta ask the same thing though. this just seems like a quick cash in using the popularity of the main show.

I'm probably never going to see it, I guess I don't mind it that much, but I head canon age them older than high school, so this bothers me just because of that.

Yeah, there IS that, I think that Collage would have been a better choice, or even post-collage? But high school is a little bit of a stretch, but then, that's the demographic, middle school girls who aspire to high school. And, you know, weirdo's. Which is why I SO want to see it.

So, I finally saw it.
It's a lot better than I thought it would be. Equestria Girls is sorta like a stand alone movie length episode, and sort of a prequel to the next season. For that alone it's worth seeing.
It's also canon, or I think it is. It definitely isn't another Universe, just a quick trip to one for a (really good) story to add to the List of really good stories that already exist within the series.
It holds strong to the base story of Friendship and is a really good addition to the lore surrounding the Elements of Harmony and their power. The high school setting helps contain the world within a manageable sphere for such a short story and adds a social aspect that allows the story to carry through without continuity issues or lengthy world building required.
Over all it is well done, relevant and Genuinely worth seeing! If for no other reason then to check out the new guy...

...yes?
Everyone at Equstria High exists parallel in Equestria as a pony. Including Twilight, but she didn't go to Equestria High and lived in the city, according to Human Pinky Pie. I'll leave it at that...

So its a parallel dimension and twilight dropped into it? Sounds like something you would read in a fanfiction. (which isn't saying anything bad about that. I mean, I write it.)

Well, she goes in there to get her crown back after it's stolen. It's completely canon, and follows on from the last episode of last season. And is preemptive of next season. So sorta a OMV episode?

Oh, THIS sordid little tale. She dragged me along too. The worst part, I didn't look out of place. Dear god there were a lot of 30 yo guys there, the only difference was they didn't have an overexcited midget clawing at their arm. Jade + too much soft drink + Ponies = Rabid Fan Girl. I think she even bit me at some stage. Next time I'm feeding her Ritlin before we go, that way she might even out a little.

I find the idea of jade clawing at your arm pretty hilarious but yeah that might be a good idea. On the other hand ritlin might not be a great idea. It doesn't work very long so unless you keep feeding her the stuff she suddenly explodes into activity
