Auskat and myself were out and about today, and it so happened that I decided to have and Orange for lunch (You know, just 'cos - Orange). I was peeling it, and as I was going, I removed quite a bit of the stringy white pith along with it. So I got to thinking, "What is this good for"? This is one of my many traits. I often try to ascertain random uses for waste or by-products, Like belly button lint, bath scum, dust bunnies or even shed hair. I soon learnt that it wasn't very absorbent (by dunking it in Auskats Coke, but it DID make it go flat, who knew!), or very useful for climbing out of a tall tower when captured and held for a kings ransom (there's just not enough of it, and then Kitty went in a rant about fibre length and tensile strength and such things. Sometimes he can even make ORANGES boring...).
But one thing it is good for is entertaining a Food court in a shopping mall. They thought it was great. In the end I made a little doll out of it and called her "Stringy". I made her a chair out of orange peel but then had to leave her behind so we could go watch "Fast and Furious 6".
Shoulda stayed with Stringy...

Well it's quite obvious what the white stringy stuff is good for. That's the tissue that transports water and nutrients through the plant AKA the paranchyma cells. (only in vascular plants though.) It's actually not bad to eat, since there are lots of vitamins and anti-oxidants in it, some research point to it being slightly anti-cancer as well. (in oranges anyway, no clue if that's for all paranchyma cells. Probably depends on plant from plant.) So if you managed to read through that bit of text without falling asleep then you know and knowing is half the battle.

I was thinking of candying them in toffee. They would go well with a tart dessert I think

I wouldn't know, I never liked the stringy stuff to be honest.

Well, yeah, that's kind of the point No one does. It's all stringy and tart and blag. But suger 'em up and dunk them in a Toffee and set it in a strip, then break it up into shards and put it on a pecan pie with whipped cream and a halved strawberry with a sprinkle of shaved dark chocolate and you have instant yum!

Seems like you could just leave it out without a problem and you probably have a more tasty desert though

but tart is good. those stringy things are basically zest, and zest is the best seasoning around
I do... but I'm the weird child who ate the whole orange peel anyway, so I'm a bad judge.

Shoulda stayed with Stringy... This actually happened. She was quite animated and off in her own world about what she could do with it. All the tables around us were staring, and unfortunately for them, she noticed. She then roped them all into it, and drew a crowed of kids. What she didn't add was that security got involved and we were asked to leave.
